At last, our forum is open! We look forward to hearing about the topics that are exercising you and/or your reading group. Meanwhile, here are a couple of issues on which we'd love to know what you think:

A Spot of Bother

I thought this book was a good effort for a second book. It is always hard to live up to the expectation when the first book had been such a success. Mark Haddon did very well there. The story focuses on a different class than "the curious incident...". The spotlight has moved from working classes to middle classes and the event is a family wedding. Cleverly MH describes every player, and how each person acts and reacts to the different twist the tale takes. Like in real life, such an important and supposedly happy event instead of bringing a family closer appears to start a series of events which could easily precipitate the whole event into a catastrophe. MH keep the reader guessing as twists in the story develop at every episode, but then it all comes together and the day is saved by the most unlikely heroes.

It was really a good book and I look forward the next one from MH.

A spot of bother

Decided to get my head around the internet as its drenching drizzle today. Had to re log on as I have changed my email address since the original web page was constructed but hopefully have succeeded. Its ironic that the title of my recent read reflects the spot of bother I had re logging on. The Curious Incident of the dog by Mark Haddon was excellent and his second book is as good if not better. Read and enjoy a Spot of Bother and hopefully he will win prizes again

Curious Incident

I read The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time and still think it's one of the best examples of narrative viewpoint: very convincing and eye-opening. A Spot of Bother has been on my reading pile ever since it came out, but was reluctant to start it since I was afraid it might disappoint my high expectations... but I will definitely start it now!
