Recommended book

20th August, 2008

Heartened by the letter from Beryl Gregory (nB47) reminding us of our "rich literary heritage". In our book group we are working our way through the 20thC choosing a book from each decade and this month we discussed "Their Eyes Were Watching God" by Zora Neale Hurston. Published in 1937, the author was a black American woman who wrote with an expert ear for the rich oral tradition of the world in which she lived. Controversial at time of publication, it fell out of favour and she died penniless but it has recently been championed by the likes of Alice Walker and Zadie Smith and is now a Virago Modern Classic. Like nothing else you will ever read, this is certainly a recommended book for discussion. You can find out more and get a flavour of the book (if you have your speaker on) by going to www.zoranealehurston.com

The Book of Lost Things by John Connolly

elizabeth kirk

This is the book I have enjoyed the most this year. I was enchanted by it. It describes the hourney of a 12 year boy into his own fantasy world when he finds the real world too much to cope with. His adventures also help him to sort out his problems, viewing them from a different perspective which helps him achieve a more grown up attitude as he stands on the threshold of adulthood. Brilliantly written, colourfully drawn characterisation, unputdownable.
