Into the Darkest Corner

Elizabeth Haynes (Author)

A very impressive first novel; it tells the story of Catherine who starts off as a lively, fun loving party girl until she meets Lee. He is handsome and charming and seems to be everything a girl could wish for but soon he becomes manipulative and controlling. The relationship reaches a catastrophic climax and Lee is imprisoned. But Catherine's life is still controlled by her fear of him until another shattering ordeal.

The story switches between 2003/2004 and 2007/2008 every few pages and some readers may find this disconcerting but I soon got used to it and the device certainly ratchets up the tension. The pain and frustration of OCD is brilliantly evoked and I winced every time Cathy embarked on yet another ritual.

The contrast between Cathy's two lives is cleverly drawn and the hesitancy in her new relationship is very believable.

This is a fantastic personal read with plenty for a reading group to discuss.
