Join newbooks publisher, Guy Pringle on our first Readers’ Gathering of 2012 for the chance to eat, drink and sleep books while having the opportunity to explore this historic area and the many delights it has to offer. In the relaxed and informal atmosphere of our Readers’ Retreat, deep in the Normandy countryside, you will have the freedom to concentrate on your reading and discuss books with like-minded people – plus the added attraction of French home cooking.
And should you choose to come with a non-reading partner we are happy to provide guidance on the historic locale – Omaha Beach, the WWII cemeteries, the Bayeux Tapestry.
For our discussion sessions this time we are asking each delegate to nominate their favourite recent reads to compile a list that has a champion for each book. So it is highly likely you will have read at least some of the final list already.
Currently the list looks like this
Room by Emma Donoghue (2011 BoY winner and free to attendees)
Dark Matter by Michelle Paver (5 star & short! And also free to attendees)
The Lotus Eaters by Tatjana Soli (5 star review)
The Book Thief by Markus Zusak (crossover)
The Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls (memoir)
Little Boy Lost by Marghanita Laski (also short!)
We probably won't add to that but we are considering nominating a poem each and having a go at a play reading - albeit later in the week when we've got to know each other a little better!
Our first four mornings will offer a structured introduction to two of the books where each champion will be encouraged to outline their book’s significance to them leading into the best kind of debate where no one’s opinion is right or wrong but all can have their say.
In the afternoons you are free to explore the area – or curl up with a book.
In the evenings you will be encouraged to share your day with the rest of the group – especially if there are bookish links.
Beyond Wednesday there will still be a bookish ambience but by then we anticipate you will have relaxed into Le Rieu and what the area has to offer so the programme is likely to develop a life of its own.
Better still, the daily cares of organising meals and social activities will be lifted from your shoulders: suggested outings based on what other visitors have enjoyed and home cooked French evening meals – meat and vegetarian dishes – prepared on site by a Normandy cook using local ingredients.
Click on Feedback below to see what the last group - readers and non-readers - had to say about their week.
Places are limited and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.
