This is one of the most memorable books I have read this year. How could anyone fail to be moved by the tragedy of Guernica? At a time when Nationalist rebels were slaughtering men, women and children all over Spain, Republican loyalists, comprised mostly of Basque soldiers, were regularly blown apart by bombs and gunned down by fighter planes. Guernica was seen as a collection basin for troops in retreat and was, therefore, a target for destruction by the Luftwaffe. Civilians as well as soldiers were massacred; the description of events on that day is horrific and shocking.
The book is rich in Basque history, culture and tradition with a focus on two families. Boling creates a story rich in atmosphere and engaging characters. I was drawn into the lives of these people and, whenever loved ones were lost, I felt enormous empathy. The story ends on a high note – perfect.
