On entry to the atmospheric P&G Wells Bookshop each ticket holder was treated to a glass of something cool and bubbly; most welcome on that warm evening.

‘A novel by a little-known author about an English widow and a young African asylum seeker has become an unlikely transatlantic hit, with Nicole Kidman, the Oscar-winning actress, vying to star in a film adaptation.
The Other Hand by Chris Cleave, a writer from south London with only one other book under his belt, sold just 3,000 copies when it came out in hardback last year. Yet in the past two months 100,000 paperbacks have been sold in Britain alone.
